Last month, Ryan and I spent a week soaking up the splendor that is autumn at the Greenbrier for an Instagram takeover. Founded in 1778, the historic property located in Southeast West Virginia is an idyllic weekend retreat and destination wedding location which offers a plethora of outdoor activities, an amazing spa, and the most over-the-top fabulous decor by none other than Dorothy Draper herself. As a Greenbrier wedding photographer, the experience was an absolute dream come true.
On a crisp fall afternoon we pulled up to the iconic Greenbrier main entrance and were greeted by the legendary Frank Mosley – the Greenbrier’s ‘ambassador’ who has greeted guests at the front door for over six generations. As usual, Frank welcomed us with the Greenbrier’s signature southern hospitality and led us to the reception which is lined with a truly magnificent Zuber mural – also seen inside of the White House.
Our historic cottage was the perfect place for our stay. With a king-sized four poster bed, wrap around porch, and an utterly charming living room complete with a wood burning fireplace and wet bar, we felt right at home and enjoyed countless hours and meals spent cozied up on the couch.
During our stay we took full advantage of the perfect fall weather and the Greenbrier’s countless activities and signature experiences. We road horses up the mountain and soaked up the splendor of autumn in the Allegheny Mountains. We learned how to fly fish with a private guide. Ryan played the PGA Championship Old White golf course and the Greenbrier Sporting Club’s private Snead course while I enjoyed a facial and mineral bath in the award-winning Spa. We took a scenic road trip, visiting the nearby historic town of Lewisburg and leaf peeping. We learned about the art of falconry and dined at several of the Greenbrier’s incredible restaurants. I even shot my first gun and hit 14 out of the 25 sporting clays (beating Ryan by two!)
The experience was an absolute dream come true – so much so that we will be returning to the Greenbrier to celebrate Christmas later this year!
