"Not all who wander are lost."
On August 28, 2016, surrounded by 75 of our closest family and friends, I married my partner of nine years, Ryan, at HammerSky Vineyards in Paso Robles, California. There is something so unbelievably intimate about traveling across the world with one's nearest and dearest, and I truly believe that having a destination wedding adds a completely unique layer of beauty and gratitude to one's wedding day. Being a recent destination wedding bride myself, I understand the joys, challenges, and complexities that come alongside planning a destination wedding and look forward to sharing my knowledge and experience with you.
I first visited Paris in 2012 and the second I stepped off the plane I was a changed person. My senses were heightened, my creativity soared, I had never felt more alive - it was like falling in love all over again. The smell of freshly baked baguettes in the morning, the sound of a violin streaming out of an open courtyard window, the magnificent promenades and the tiny little courtyards, Paris literally overflowed with inspiration that I couldn't soak in fast enough. Since then my love affair with Paris continues to grow, and I have been fortunate enough to have traveled to the City of Light seven times in the last five years.
Three and a half years ago a tiny, sick, scared, and nearly furless stray dog was dropped off at our house as an emergency foster. Within 24 hours we were smitten, and our beloved foster-failure, Yoda, has never left our sides since. He is my best friend, my constant source of joy, and our lives are so much richer because of him. As cliché as it sounds, my rescue truly did rescue me and has inspired me to become even more involved with animal welfare and activism. From volunteering with animal rescues to living a proud vegetarian lifestyle, I'm committed to making the world a better place for all living beings.
Five years ago I spent two months traveling through Europe alone, an incredibly empowering and inspiring experience that shaped the artist, the wife, and the woman that I am today. The time I spent wandering through enchanting gardens, down cobblestone streets, and sitting in corner cafes soaking in the energy around me set my heart on fire and turned me into a lifelong explorer. I am a firm believer that we are first and foremost citizens of the world, and will forever have the soul of a traveler, a wanderer, and an adventurer.
The quickest way to my heart is through cheese. But all jokes aside, I take my cheese very, very seriously. My idea of a perfect date night is filling up a picnic basket with my favorite cheeses (Fromage D'Affinois and Humboldt Fog immediately come to mind), fresh baguette, apples, figs, Marcona almonds, honeycomb, an arugula salad lightly dressed with olive oil and fleur de sel, and a chilled bottle of Vouvray, grabbing a blanket, and spending the evening amongst nature with my beloved.
A nostalgic at heart, there is something I find so devastatingly beautiful about old-world Europe. I love spending hours upon hours wandering through the hidden alleyways and passages, admiring the intricate architecture, and getting lost in my thoughts. Whether I'm driving in my car, trying my hand at a new French recipe, or editing on my computer, more often than not you can find me listening to either 1920's French music or the Marie Antoinette soundtrack. I have a never-ending love for the Brontë sisters and all English Gothic literature, and I'm still mourning the loss of Downton Abbey.
I have a soft spot in my heart for anything old, ornate, and charming. Two years ago we moved into our dream home - a quaint 1905 yellow Victorian cottage that I have lovingly filled with antiques and bits and bobbles from our travels. Our walls are covered with vintage prints found at Parisian flea markets, several paintings by one of my favorite artists Jeff Masters (who just so happens to be my uncle), and framed photos from our adventures. As much as we love to explore, my heart is happiest when I'm curled up on our settee with Ryan, Yoda, and a glass of wine. For a peek into our home, see the hashtag #MLCathome.
Together for nearly a decade but newlyweds always and forever, my husband Ryan is my rock, my travel companion, and my biggest supporter. He has more friends than anyone I have ever met and his laugh lights up the room. Whether he is helping load my film at a wedding editorial or waking up with me at dawn so we can enjoy those first few golden moments of light in Paris, just the two of us, his love and support are what give me the strength and courage to relentlessly pursue my dreams. No matter if we are exploring the world together or simply enjoying a quiet alfresco meal at home, every day that he is in my life is a blessing.
