When visiting Paris, one of my absolute favorite places to spend a quiet afternoon is the Palais Royal. And, as a Paris wedding photographer, it is one of my absolute favorite places to sneak away with clients for an early-morning photoshoot. Located just one block from the ever-popular Louvre, this enchanting courtyard and garden somehow always manages to remain quiet and serene – a respite from the busy streets outside. The large inner courtyard, the Cour d’Honneur, is home to artist Daniel Buren’s art installation known as Les Colonnes de Buren. These black and white columns, an ever popular backdrop for fashion bloggers, feel reminiscent of something you would find in a Tim Burton movie. Although the installation is over 30 years old, it still feels just as fresh and modern as the day that was conceived.
Past the sculptures, you will find a beautiful French garden that, spring, summer, and early fall, is absolutely overflowing with roses. Boxwood hedges create several tiny squares, the perfect place to sit and read for a few hours. The courtyard is enclosed by covered galleries that are home to some of the city’s most prestigious shopping destinations including Stella McCartney, Rick Owens, and the legendary vintage haute couture mecca of Didier Ludot. After you faire du lèche-vitrines (window shop), enjoy lunch at the magnificent Michelin-starred Le Grand Véfour – the perfect end to a perfectly Parisian morning.
