Summertime in the Provençal Hill Town of Gordes, France

The Provençal hill town of Gordes seems to float almost mystically over the Luberon Valley. A cluster of sun-bleached stone buildings covered with crawling ivy, olive trees, and roses, perched precariously on the hillside, it’s easy to understand why travelers from near and far flock to this jewel of a village for the quintessential Provencal experience. As a Gordes wedding photographer, I love every chance I can get to visit this beautiful village.

Although we had been warned of potential crowds, we were pleasantly surprised to find the village nearly deserted of tourists. Instead, when we arrived at the five o’clock hour it seemed that the streets were virtually deserted – as it was the time of the day where the locals headed into their favorite bistro à vin for a glass of rosé. We followed suit, I throwing on a pair of heels and Ryan (quite comically) changing clothes in our tiny Renault, and headed to the absolutely stunning hotel – La Bastide de Gordes – for a bottle champagne on the terrace. We lingered over our drinks, watching the sun slowly dip below the horizon, and once the light of day had passed we headed inside for dinner at L’Orangerie – a true gastronomic delight.
